Wildland Fire Operations

A large wildfire is burning near a road, with thick black smoke and flames visible. Emergency vehicles are present.

Fast-moving fires. Changing conditions. A prepared response.

Dry grass, brush, and strong winds can turn a small ignition into a rapidly spreading wildfire. Umatilla Fire protects a landscape where these light, flashy fuels meet homes, businesses, industrial facilities, and critical infrastructure. Our crews prepare for fires that can change direction quickly, threaten multiple properties, and demand decisive action from the first arriving unit.

Wildland firefighting requires mobility, situational awareness, and coordinated tactics. Our personnel train to assess fire behavior, establish safe operating positions, deploy hose lines, protect structures, and work alongside neighboring agencies. From the initial attack through containment and mop-up, our focus is protecting lives, limiting fire spread, and preventing rekindles.

Protecting the Wildland–Urban Interface

The wildland–urban interface is where homes and other development meet grass, brush, and open land. In these areas, firefighters must address the advancing vegetation fire while protecting buildings, maintaining escape routes, and supporting evacuation efforts when needed.

Our engines, brush apparatus, and water tenders provide options for accessing difficult terrain, delivering water where hydrants are limited, and defending threatened properties. Crews select equipment and tactics based on access, terrain, weather, fire behavior, and available resources.

Regional Strength Through Mutual Aid

Wildfires do not stop at district boundaries. Through our Tri-Counties Mutual Aid Agreement, Umatilla Fire works with neighboring fire agencies to bring additional firefighters, apparatus, and water supply to incidents that exceed local resources. These partnerships support a coordinated response when rapidly developing fires require more personnel and equipment.

Answering Oregon’s Call

Umatilla Fire also participates in Oregon’s statewide conflagration response, deploying available personnel and apparatus to help communities facing major wildfires. These assignments place our firefighters alongside agencies from across Oregon, strengthening teamwork and bringing valuable operational experience home to our district.

Whether responding to a roadside grass fire, defending a neighborhood, or assisting another Oregon community, our commitment remains the same: respond with purpose, work together, and stay engaged until the job is done.
