Emergency Medical Services
When a medical emergency happens, timely care matters. Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District responds to all emergency medical incidents within our jurisdiction, including medical emergencies, injuries, and traffic collisions. Our firefighters provide immediate care as a Basic Life Support quick response team, bringing trained personnel and lifesaving equipment directly to those who need help.
Our response begins alongside the dispatch of Umatilla County Fire District 1, the designated ambulance transport provider for our ambulance service area. While their ambulance responds from Hermiston, our personnel respond locally to assess patients, identify immediate threats to life, begin treatment, and prepare for the arriving ambulance crew.
Depending on the emergency, that care may include CPR, automated external defibrillator use, airway support, bleeding control, and other interventions within our personnel’s training and authorized scope of practice. At traffic collisions, our firefighters also work to control hazards, safely access patients, and perform extrication when necessary.

Our role is to bring care to the patient as quickly as possible and make every part of the response count. We communicate patient findings to the ambulance crew, assist with continued treatment, and support a coordinated transfer of care. This partnership allows fire and ambulance personnel to work together toward the same goal: the best possible outcome for each patient.
Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District does not provide ambulance transportation. That responsibility belongs to Umatilla County Fire District 1. Our first response service provides an essential local layer of care, helping bridge the time between a call for help and the arrival of the transporting ambulance.
Through ongoing training, operational readiness, and close coordination with our emergency response partners, we are committed to delivering prompt, professional, and compassionate care. Whether the emergency involves a sudden illness, a serious injury, or a collision, our focus remains on the person who needs us—and the family depending on us.
For a medical emergency, call 911.
