Volunteer Firefighter

YOUR TOWN. YOUR CREW. YOUR CALL.

Become a Volunteer Firefighter with Umatilla Fire.

When someone calls for help, you could be part of the answer.

Learn to pull hose, raise ladders, work around a fire engine, and support someone through an emergency. Train with a crew that expects your best—and helps you get there.

Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District is looking for people willing to step forward, put in the work, and serve.

You don’t need to have your future figured out. You need a reason to start and the commitment to follow through.

Step Into Something That Matters.

There is a moment when training becomes useful. When the hose you practiced deploying needs to move. When your crew needs a tool and you know exactly where it is. When a frightened neighbor needs someone calm beside them.

That confidence is earned through practice, effort, and people teaching people.

Our volunteer program gives you an opportunity to build it.

Get involved. Get trained. Become someone your crew can count on.

Here’s What You’ll Learn.

Hands on. Step by step. Alongside your crew.

Your training begins with safety and the fundamentals. As you progress, opportunities may include:

FIGHT FIRE
Learn protective equipment, hose handling, ladders, water supply, and the teamwork behind fire suppression.

WORK THE WILDLAND
Develop an understanding of fire behavior, tools, hose work, and the hazards of fighting vegetation fires.

HELP WHEN PEOPLE ARE HURT
Build emergency medical response skills appropriate to your training and credentials.

SUPPORT RESCUE OPERATIONS
Learn scene safety, vehicle stabilization, rescue tools, and how crews approach difficult situations.

COMMUNICATE UNDER PRESSURE
Practice radio traffic, accountability, and working within incident command.

KEEP THE CREW READY
Learn the apparatus, check the equipment, and take care of the tools people depend on.

Training and assignments depend on your progress, qualifications, and available opportunities.

You bring the effort. We help you turn it into ability.

This Is What Being a Volunteer Looks Like.

It’s Tuesday-night training. Learning a new skill, then doing it again until it starts to click.

It’s checking equipment before a call and getting everything ready again afterward.

It’s responding when you are available and authorized, listening to your officer, and doing your assigned job well.

It’s helping at a community event and meeting the people you serve.

And sometimes, it’s standing beside your crew after a difficult job, knowing everyone contributed.

You are joining the work—and the people who do it.

Bring Your Best. We’ll Build From There.

We want people who:

  • Show up. Participation is how you learn and how your crew learns to trust you.
  • Stay teachable. Ask questions, accept coaching, and practice.
  • Work safely. Know your limits and follow direction.
  • Own their part. Take responsibility for your actions and equipment.
  • Respect people. Your crew and your community deserve it.
  • Follow through. Communicate, contribute, and finish the job.

You will make mistakes while learning. What matters is listening, improving, and coming back ready to work.

The strongest thing you can bring on day one is a willingness to learn.

Make Room for a Different Kind of Tuesday.

Volunteer training takes place Tuesday evenings.

Training gives you time to work with equipment, practice with your crew, and build skills before an emergency.

We understand that work and family are part of your life. During recruitment, we’ll talk honestly about your availability, attendance expectations, response opportunities, and the commitment this program requires.

Have questions about making it work? Start the conversation.

Looking for a Career? Start Building Experience.

Want to serve your hometown? You belong in this conversation, too.

Volunteering can help you explore a fire service career and understand the preparation, discipline, and teamwork the profession requires.

It can also become a meaningful commitment alongside the career and life you already have.

Your reason for joining may be different from the person beside you.

Your shared purpose is the same: helping when it matters.
