Support Volunteer

DIFFERENT SKILLS. ONE MISSION.

Become a Support Volunteer with Umatilla Fire.

You don’t have to enter a burning building to make a difference.

Drive the water tender. Care for a patient. Help operate a drone. Prepare a meal for a tired crew. Organize the records that keep a district moving.

Behind every effective response are people doing essential work.

Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District is looking for dependable people who want to contribute their skills, learn something new, and serve their community.

There is more than one way to answer the call. Find yours.

Bring What You Know. Build What Comes Next.

Are you comfortable operating large vehicles? Experienced in healthcare, aviation, rescue, cooking, office work, or organizing people and supplies?

Tell us about it.

You may already have skills that can strengthen our team. You may also be looking for a new challenge. We’ll discuss your interests, experience, availability, and the training needed for an appropriate assignment.

Support is part of the mission. Your contribution matters.

Find Your Role

Water Tender Driver

Help get water where crews need it.

Water tender personnel support water delivery for firefighting operations. Duties may include vehicle inspections, driving, and water-supply activities after completing the required training and evaluations.

Driving experience is valuable, but emergency apparatus operation requires additional qualification and District approval.

EMT & Medical Response

Bring calm, care, and qualified help.

Licensed medical volunteers may assist with patient assessment and care within their authorized role.

Medical assignments require appropriate Oregon licensure, applicable medical direction, District onboarding, and authorization. A support assignment alone does not qualify someone to practice as an EMT.

Technical Rescue Specialist

Put specialized experience to work.

Have a background in rope rescue, confined space, trench rescue, water rescue, or another technical discipline? We want to hear from you.

Specialist assignments require verified qualifications, role-specific training, and District authorization. Participation depends on the team, equipment, and supervision available—not individual experience alone.

Drone Operator & Aviation Support

Help responders see the bigger picture.

Drone personnel may support incident observation, searches, mapping, and situational awareness.

Roles can include qualified pilot duties, visual observation, equipment readiness, and flight documentation. Operations must meet applicable FAA requirements and District procedures.

Responder Rehabilitation

Take care of the people doing the work.

Rehabilitation volunteers help establish and operate designated areas where responders can rest, hydrate, and recover.

Assignments may include setting up shelter and seating, distributing supplies, and supporting accountability. Medical assessment or treatment is reserved for appropriately qualified and authorized personnel.

Cooking & Crew Support

A fed crew is a better-supported crew.

Help prepare and serve meals for training, planned activities, and extended operations.

We need people who can organize supplies, maintain clean food-preparation areas, account for dietary needs, and help with setup and cleanup.

A hot meal after a long assignment can mean a great deal to the people receiving it.

Administrative & Office Support

Keep the work behind the response moving.

Good organization helps a fire district serve its community. Depending on your skills and District needs, assignments may include:

  • Data entry, filing, and document organization.
  • Scheduling and calendar support.
  • Preparing training materials and assembling packets.
  • Organizing supply inventories and tracking information.
  • Supporting recruitment, community events, and public education.
  • Assisting with routine correspondence and other assigned office projects.

Administrative volunteers receive direction appropriate to their duties. Access to confidential information, financial systems, personnel records, and other restricted materials is limited to specifically authorized assignments.

If you are organized, dependable, and good at following through, we want to meet you.

Logistics & Equipment Support

Have what the crew needs, ready when they need it.

Help organize supplies, prepare equipment, support training setups, and restore readiness after activities.

For someone who enjoys practical work, checking details, and keeping things in order, logistics can be a valuable place to serve.

Training That Fits the Assignment

Learn your role. Know your limits. Work as a team.

Support volunteers receive orientation and training appropriate to their responsibilities. That may include safety, communications, protective equipment, accountability, and equipment procedures.

For applicable incident-support assignments, the District can identify a training pathway aligned with DPSST’s NFPA Support Person certification requirements.

That certification is not a blanket qualification for every role listed here. Driving, medical care, technical rescue, and drone operations have separate requirements. Administrative, cooking, and other nonoperational assignments may follow different training pathways.

You will work within your training and authorization. A support role does not authorize interior firefighting or entry into hazardous environments.

What We Need From You

Reliability. Follow through on the commitments you make.

A willingness to learn. Accept instruction and ask questions.

Respect. Treat your crew and community professionally.

Good judgment. Follow safety procedures and protect confidential information.

Communication. Be honest about your availability and speak up when you need help.

You do not have to do every job. You do need to take your job seriously.
